Teuscher Beverly Hills: Chili Dark Chocolate Bar

As delightful as the Teuscher 66% cocoa dark chocolate bar was, with its buttery texture and pleasing flavor, Teuscher’s real strength is in their flavored chocolates. Whether in bar, praline, or truffle form, they simply excel at enhancing chocolate with flavorful add ins. I was therefore very excited to evaluate the dark chocolate with chili bar that I’d picked up when visiting the Beverly Hills shop.

The aroma of the bar included a hint of chili, and Jackie, the chocolate consultant I spoke with at the shop, informed me that the chili taste is most notable in the back of the throat.

At first bite, I wasn’t sure there was much of any chili. The pleasingly bitter-but-sweet chocolate is evident immediately, and then the chili slowly built up as I enjoyed the smooth, slow melt. Indeed, the chili was most apparent at the back of my throat, but was tempered in intensity by a bit of added sugar and the buttery melt of the chocolate. The flavor is generally well balanced, until the end when only the chili remains.

When I was younger, my mom informed me that a spicy aftertaste could be eliminated by eating chocolate. So I took another bite of this bar. And when the chili taste lingered, I took another bite. And then…

Have you ever used chocolate to chase a super-spicy aftertaste?
